We took Oscar on a magical mystery tour today. We were heading for Locomotion Railway Museumin Shildon, but decided to go via Middlesbrough so Oscar could have a go on the Transporter Bridge.

Luckily the River Tees is beautiful at low tide. The nuclear power plant in the distance is particularly attractive…not sure it should be glowing bright green…

But it was worth risking radiation poisoning and long term retinal damage to ride on the gondola…

We then drove towards Shildon via Newton Aycliffe to take a look at the new bit of corporate art installed at the industrial estate…

Which was ok…big.

When we eventually got to Shildon I spent ages taking these pictures for this blog post…

…but then a train enthusiast mistook me for one of his own and started talking to me about train numbers, so I stopped, and then walked away slowly…

Later, Oscar had a great time financially crippling us at the gift shop…so all in all, it was a good day!

Sometimes it’s bad to actually go trip during the day and be near giant wire statues that look like people. Also, trains inside buildings. hahaha. But great images!
Nice one Paul.
Your blog is a link to my heritage. I remember going cross the Transporter as a child,
My mother hails from Shildon and we are up at Blackhall Rocks tomorrow.
Look out for the old fart and little girl on the beach!
Ha, and they say its grim up north!
The Transporter Bridge was closed for a couple of years – then there was that whole move to Nevada incident – but now its back to its former glory…
Shildon is a great place for kids, (and adults) and it’s only down the road. It also has a better Thomas the Tank Engine shop that The National Railway Museum in York, which pleases Oscar no end!
The Durham coastline is also very beautiful. We take the bairn down there a cople of times a week – theres a great chip shop in Blackhall as well! I took these pictures click here a few weeks ago…
